Tips & Tricks to help you care for your corset, get into your corset, and more!

Putting On Your Corset

It is much easier to put on your corset if you have somebody to assist you.  Follow these steps to successfully put on your corset, whether alone, or assisted.

  • Always unlace your corset before taking it of or putting it on.  Failure to do so will put too much strain on the corset.  Untie the bow and loosen all the ‘X’s until the corset is completely loose.
  • Wrap the corset around your body, and fasten the corset.  Your corset will include either hook and eye or busk closure.  We recommend starting at the bottom of the corset and working your way up.  Do not begin to tighten the laces until the corset is fastened.
  • Tighten the laces on the corset.  Your corset should fit snugly, but comfortably.  There are three different ways to lace your corset.  (See Below).  Never over tighten the laces as this may cause damage to the corset fabric, the busk or hooks, and the eyelets.  If putting on your corset by yourself, reach around and gently pull the ‘X’s until snug.
  • Ensure your bust is in the desired place before completely lacing the corset.  Once the corset is comfortably snug, but not over tightened, finish by tying the ribbon in a bow.

 Lacing Your Corset

There are three ways to lace your corset.  One & Two are the easiest if you plan to put on your corset by yourself.  Three is the classic way to lace a corset.

  1. Bottom to Top: Start lacing your corset at the bottom and work your way up to the top.
  2. Top to Bottom: Start lacing your corset at the top and work your way down to the bottom.
  3. Bi-Directional Lacing: Lace your corset from the top to the middle and tie in a bow.  Take a separate piece of ribbon and lace your corset from the bottom to the middle.  The two pieces of ribbon will meet in the middle and can be tied in a bow together to create a nicer, more traditional appearance.

Breaking In Your Corset

When you first get your corset, you will need to break it in and mould it to your particular body.  This will require you to wear your corset frequently for short periods of time.  We recommend wearing your corset for the first time for a maximum of 1-2 hours.  After wearing the corset for the first half hour, retighten the laces and continue wearing it for the remainder of the first wearing.  This allows for the corset fabrics to stretch evenly and for the overall shape to mould to your body.  This will prolong the life of the corset, make it more comfortable, and ensure that the fabric, hooks and eyelets do not get damaged.

Failure to break in your corset can cause damage to the corset.

Caring for Your Corset

Never machine wash your corset.  Hand wash in cold water with a very mild detergent.  Hang dry your corset by placing on a hanger inside out, with the lacing over the hanger.  Never tumble dry your corset, or hang dry outside as it may result in discoloration from the sun.  Store your corset by hanging over a hanger with the lacing over the hanger.  Folding or rolling your corset may cause the boning to warp out of shape.  Never store your corset until completely dry.  Use a very small amount of fabric refresher to freshen your corset between washing.

Trying On Your Corset

Once the tags have been removed from your corset, it will no longer be accepted for exchange.  Follow these steps for trying on your corset prior to removing any tags.

  • Loosen the lacing on the back of the corset.  You may completely unlace the corset if necessary.
  • Wrap the corset around your body and fasten any hook & eye or busk fasteners.
  • Have a friend assist you in gently lacing up your corset.  DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
  • Once your corset is laced, you should have between a two and six inch gap.

If the gap on your corset is too big, you will require a larger size.  If the gap on your corset is too small, you will require a smaller size.  Gap size depends on your personal preference, there is no right or wrong size.  Some women prefer to have no gap, while others prefer to have a larger gap.  However, we do recommend between two and six inches to give you room to adjust.

If you do need to exchange the corset, please ensure you gently re-lace the corset before returning it.

Corset Exchange/Return Policies

If your corset is damaged due to over tightening during try on, your corset will not be accepted for refund or replacement.  Over tightening your corset may result in tearing along the boning or damage to the eyelets, busk, or hook & eye closure.  Each corset is inspected before shipment to ensure it is free from any manufacturer defects.

Ensure your corset is in original, unworn condition, tags attached.  If you removed the tags prior to trying on your corset, it will not be accepted for return under any circumstances.  If you are purchasing the corset as a gift, you may ‘blackout’ the price on the tag; however, you may not remove the tag, or interfere with the product number or size in any way.

More Helpful Recommendations

  • Never hang your corset to dry over a metal hanger as it may cause rust stains.
  • Dry-Cleaning is the best way to wash your corset.  Cleaning solutions and detergents may water-mark your corset.
  • Do not wear your corset for extended periods of time before breaking it in.
  • Research the health risks involved in wearing a corset frequently, of for extended periods of time.
  • Be completely ready before putting on your corset.  Dressing, putting on shoes, and doing hair and make-up can be very difficult once your corset is on.
  • Never bend at the waist while wearing a corset.  Bend at your knees if you need to bend down.  Bending at the waist can damage your corset and cause you discomfort.
  • Wear a thin camisole or tube top to prevent skin chafing if needed.
